Weekend Scrapbook Challenge

Thank goodness it’s Friday! I had a really busy week and I’m so happy for a few days off. I haven’t spent any time in my craft room for days. You know what happens when you don’t exercise the creative muscle, right? My mojo has left the building.

So, I thought I would issue a little challenge to myself for the weekend. I was reading the February issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine and there’s an article in there about 4 ways to boost your creativity. The first one to create a layout using justΒ three products. It’s the exact push I need for myself this weekend.

The Challenge

I’m not so sure I could limit myself to just three things. OK, I could force it but I don’t think I’d be too thrilled with the results. I took the “three” concept and expanded it to three pattern papers, three embellishments and three tools. And here’s what I have:

The final challenge products are:

I have no idea what photos I will use or what the design will be, but I will incorporate all the products into a layout. I’m really hoping this sparks the ideas for other projects I want to work on this weekend. I will share my results next week!

Do you ever issue creative challenges to yourself when your mojo is low? What kinds of things help you find the creativity again?

  1. I keep a stack of layout ideas that I’ve seen in magazines and websites. When I don’t know what to do, I start thumbing threw them and drawing layouts based on those. I also will dig into the depths of my craft boxes to find supplies that I haven’t used yet or have been “saving.” There’s no time like a creative lull to use something that you’ve been saving.

    • That’s a great idea – I need to start going through my sketch pile and find something really fun. I tend to hoard products I love, so you are right – it’s the perfect time to dig into the stash!

  2. I go hunting for challenges all the time! Left on my own, I would probably get only half as many layouts done! By finding a sketch or a challenge, I get at least 1 layout a week! Love the combo! I cannot wait to see what you create! Ir will be fabulous!!!

    • Thanks – I’ve been hanging on to these papers for a few months. Haven’t found the right phots yet. But I WILL! That’s the fun of a challenge, right? πŸ™‚

  3. I try grabing a handful of items out of my stash and see what comes about. I also like looking at other blogs and galleries for ideas. Love the color combs you picked out.

    • Thanks – it’s all about the pattern paper. I loved this collection and I did what you said, just grabbed a few other random things. That coordinate, of course. I would be terrible at winging it if I covered my eyes and pulled out pink brads and purple ribbon and these papers. That’s why I can’t do the “limit yourself to three products.” LOL. I’d hate it. So as long as it all coordinates, I can totally do the challenge. πŸ˜€

  4. What a fun idea! I think challenges are the way for me to get back in to scrapping. I’m in such a slump right now πŸ™‚

    • Winter is partly my problem. I find grey clouds and no direct sunlight to be vastly uninspiring….. πŸ™ I hope you climb out of your slump too! πŸ™‚

  5. A couple friends and I started a FB group for local scrapbookers a couple days ago. Although I love chatting with scrappers from all over the world, there’s something extra inspiring about seeing local people’s work and knowing I’ll be able to connect with them in person someday soon.

  6. I love how you made the challenge your own.
I don’t seem to challenge myself. But its changing this year.
I want to challenge myself to use sketches. I haven’t done that many layouts last year, so hoping this will get me going this year:)

    • I’m almost to the point where I can’t even start if I don’t have a sketch. I’ll just push stuff around on the page and that’s just not productive. There are so many great sketch sites out there – you’ll be able to find some good ones! I never really challenged myself either but sometimes….you gotta do something drastic!

  7. Hi Tammy –

What a pretty site! Love seeing your review of the CHA products (great colors there!) and enjoyed reading about you (really nice read :D).

Fun challenge & great choices. I’ll check back cause I’m curious how your challenge layout will turn out.
