Happiness Project Blog Hop | Pay Attention

Welcome to the Happiness Blog Hop, brought to you by Scrapworthy Lives! You should have arrived here from Scrapping Mojo. If you didn’t, no worries. There’s a complete list of participants at the end of this post.

This month, we are focusing on paying attention. In her book, The Happiness Project, Gretchen Ruben talks about several ways we can be more mindful of everything going on around us. When I thought about how I could apply some of these ideas to make me a better scrapbooker, it hit me that being a scapbooker has helped me become more aware of everything happening in my life.

Before I started scrapbooking, I never really looked for special moments in my day to snap photos of. I never made it a point to have my camera with me. Time spent with family was fun but I wasn’t looking for fun stories to document. I was living my life but I wasn’t really paying that much attention to what was happening around me.

But scrapbooking changed everything. No longer was I just a passenger on this train called life. I was in the driver’s seat and I was directing which way to go. I started orchestrating my life so that I could participate in the activities I wanted to remember, I was savoring the time I spent with my nephews and jotting down the funny things they said, I was doing things I had never done…all in the hopes of creating special memories I would never want to forget.

Because I am a scrapbooker, I:

  • Pay more attention to the little things
  • Listen more and try to really see what’s around me
  • Have my camera at the ready to capture the mundane and the special
  • Cultivate a sense of adventure knowing I’ll have something new to document
  • Know that the details of every day life are just as important as the special events
  • Enjoy the holidays more fully as I capture and record all the details as they happen
  • Am a happier person

And if you don’t believe me, pictures can sometimes say it better than words.

I suppose some of these moments might have been captured even if I wasn’t a scrapbooker. But I like to think that because I AM a scrapbooker, I see these moments much more clearly and recognize when they are happening because I pay attention.

  5. I think some of the photos would not have been taken if you were not a scrapbooker. I know people who look at my photos say I wish I had a photo of our dinner or of this event.

    Great job!

I will have to check out that book 🙂
